8 books to build a profitable trading strategy

Most traders copy setups. Very few understand why a setup works, which is the part you need before you can build one of your own. Over three years of quant trading I read a lot of books and watched a lot of videos. These eight are the ones that actually changed how I put a strategy together.

They are not a random stack. Read together, they cover the four pieces every strategy needs: a trend filter, rules, a setup with defined entries and exits, and timing.

How the pieces fit

  1. TrendStan Weinstein's stage analysis tells you which markets are worth trading at all.
  2. RulesBruce Babcock's principles are the guardrails every setup has to respect.
  3. SetupAlan Farley and John Crane give you the patterns, and where to get in and out of them.
  4. TimingRobert Miner adds price and time projections and multi-timeframe momentum to confirm the trade.

The eight books

  1. 01
    START HERE

    Swing Trading For Dummies

    Omar Bassal

The plain-language foundation: what swing trading is, how to read a chart, and how to size a position. Read it first if any of the terms in the other seven are new.

  2. 02
    TREND FILTER

Secrets for Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets

    Stan Weinstein

Stage analysis with the 30-week moving average: buy in Stage 2, stay away in Stage 4. It is the simplest filter on this list, and the one that removes the most bad trades.

  3. 03
    THE RULES

The Four Cardinal Principles of Trading

    Bruce Babcock

The principles a strategy has to obey to survive: trade with the trend, cut losses, let profits run and manage risk. A good setup that breaks them still loses money.

  4. 04
    SETUPS

    The Master Swing Trader

    Alan Farley

Patterns, cycles and how price actually moves between trends and ranges. The book most of the setup ideas in my strategies trace back to.

  5. 05
    ENTRIES & EXITS

Targeting Profitable Entry & Exit Points

    Alan Farley

Most of a strategy's result comes from where you get in and where you get out. This one is entirely about placing those two points well.

  6. 06
    NEXT LEVEL

    Advanced Swing Trading

    John Crane

Reversal setups and more structured trade plans, once the basics of swing trading are second nature.

  7. 07
    PRICE & TIME

    Dynamic Trading

    Robert Miner

Fibonacci price and time projections combined with wave structure, so a trade has both a level and a window in which it should work.

  8. 08
    CONFIRMATION

    High Probability Trading Strategies

    Robert Miner

Multiple-timeframe momentum, price and time brought together into a complete plan. It turns a setup that might work into one with the odds on its side.

Putting it together

Trend from Weinstein, rules from Babcock, the setup from Farley and Crane, and timing from Miner. Build each piece, test it on past data, and only then trade it. Follow Marketframe for the next part, where we build one.
